Belknap's birthplace is Damariscotta in Maine. She is the daughter of David and Louise Belknap. She attended Lincoln Academy in Newcastle Maine. As a student at Middlebury College in Vermont she discovered an interest in acting. After that, she studied at the American Conservatory Theater earning a Master of Fine Arts degree. Belknap has numerous television credits, including series regular roles on Medical Investigation, Third Watch, ER, The Handler and Deadline. Also, she played guest-starring roles on Law & Order Law & Special Victims' Unit as well as Without a Trace. Belknap played in the film Alchemy and made her feature film debut in the independent film The Reality Trap.
